Our Verdict

The Mazda 6e GT is Mazda's first large electric sedan in Australia — and the one that most directly competes with the Tesla Model 3 Long Range and Ioniq 6 on specifications. 552km WLTP from a 77.5kWh battery, 150kW DC charging, and Mazda's premium interior quality create a compelling package for buyers who want a Japanese luxury EV sedan. The 150kW DC charging is the limitation versus the Korean 800V cars; the Mazda dealer network and established Japanese service culture are the counterpoint.

What we like

  • 552km WLTP — class-competitive range
  • Mazda premium interior: kinetic gold elements, signature design
  • Wireless CarPlay and Android Auto standard
  • Established Mazda dealer network and service culture
  • Five-year warranty (confirm current Mazda EV terms)

What could be better

  • 150kW DC — slower than Hyundai/Kia 800V alternatives
  • No V2L
  • Large sedan format limits rear headroom in some configurations
  • First generation EV platform — less mature than E-GMP

Overview

The Mazda 6e is Mazda’s large electric sedan — the brand’s answer to the Ioniq 6, Tesla Model 3 Long Range, and the larger end of the EV sedan segment. It is the most premium and capable Mazda EV in Australia, and it reflects the brand’s distinctive design and interior philosophy.

The 6e’s exterior design draws on Mazda’s Kodo philosophy — subtle, flowing surfaces and less visual complexity than competitors. The interior continues this approach with premium materials, Mazda’s signature kinetic gold details, and an environment that prioritises refinement over technology showmanship.

The 6e’s 150kW DC charging is functional — 10 to 80 per cent takes approximately 38 minutes — but trails the Ioniq 6 RWD’s 350kW capability significantly. For buyers who primarily charge at home and use DC charging occasionally, this matters less than it might for daily highway users.

Key Specification

Battery: 77.5kWh. WLTP: 552km. Drive: RWD. DC: 150kW. 0-100: approximately 7.7s. Price: approximately $79,900.

Real-world highway range: 440-480km. 10-80% at 150kW DC: approximately 38 minutes. AC 11kW three-phase: approximately 8.5 hours.

Interior and Technology

Mazda’s interior design philosophy emphasises clean surfaces and quality materials over screen maximalism. The instrument panel is uncluttered; a 12.3-inch infotainment and 12.3-inch driver display sit in a coherent housing. Wireless CarPlay and Android Auto are standard. The overall environment is one of the more refined and understated in the segment.

Physical HVAC controls below the screen. Head-up display standard on the GT grade. Bose audio available.

Safety

Five-star ANCAP. Mazda i-Activsense: AEB with pedestrian/cyclist detection, Lane Departure Warning, Blind Spot Monitoring, Rear Cross Traffic Alert. MRCC (Mazda Radar Cruise Control) standard.

Verdict

The Mazda 6e GT is for buyers who want a premium Japanese EV sedan — Mazda’s interior philosophy, an established dealer network, and 552km of WLTP range at a price that competes with the Ioniq 6 RWD and below the Polestar 2 Long Range. The 150kW DC charging is the technical compromise. For buyers who value the Mazda brand and its dealer support, the 6e GT is the credible EV sedan choice.
